Why use an architect?

Many people believe that an architect's job is simply to design spaces and choose attractive finishes.  While that is the part of the job that we are most passionate about, it's only about 5% of what we do. Our experienced vision allows us to curate thoughtful spaces to fit the client's needs while considering the value and use for the life of the build.

What is the remaining 95% of our job?  Most of what an architect does is ultimately protecting the client's investment.  We include details and specifications for products that we have vetted for quality, warranties and coordination with other materials and codes in order to build to a standard that will maintain longevity and minimize maintenance (thus increasing value).  We identify what products/systems you want in your build (with consideration of lead time and constructability) before the contractor gets started so that they don't waste expensive time and resources with changes that ultimately cost you more.  We coordinate systems such as how utilities get routed around the structure, how rainwater gets routed away from the building, or how to insulate, ventilate and avoid condensation. We are your advocate while coordinating with the contractor to maintain the original design intent while they decide how the build will come together and how much they will charge you for it.  Lastly, we follow through by visiting the site to make sure you are getting everything out of your build that you paid for.

BUILDING DESIGN

We regularly seek design features and methods to help our clients maintain health and efficiency (aging in place solutions, storage, material choices or smart technology).  Regarding design, our personal favorite styles are Modern Scandinavian, European Transitional and Modern Moroccan.  But ultimately, our goal is to deliver what suits you best!

RENDERING

Using the latest technology we are able to model and render your build (as an image or video) to help you visualize scale, flow and aesthetics.

CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION

Construction documentation is the most important way to ensure quality and accuracy of your build.  We detail how utilities get routed around the structure, how rainwater gets routed away from the building, or how to insulate, ventilate and avoid condensation. This ensures your project functions optimally for a lifetime.  Our full service documents specify materials, fixtures and finishes so the client can get accurate pricing and scheduling from your contractor and minimizes additional cost and delays during construction.

PERMITTING

Depending on the jurisdiction that you are building in, the plans review process can be exhaustive.  Bonnie has personally obtained permits for over 60 projects throughout the US and understands how to navigate the process as it can be different and ever evolving in each municipality.  We are happy to take that off your hands so that you can concentrate on the fun stuff.
